ASCENDING BACKWARDS

After being monitored for three days, Aunt Jewel is finally discharged from the hospital. I look at her as we ride home in the back of a cab. It’s amazing how similar our features are. Her eyes are my eyes. Her hair is my hair. Our cheekbones are the same. It’s like having a fast forward button and being able to see what I’ll look like twenty years from now.

She feels me looking at her and turns toward me with a heart-warming smile. “You mother said she was coming over today, so when we arrive home, I’m going to need your help preparing dinner.”

“Coming over? For what?”

“I invited her.”

“But why? You know we’re going to have to keep our eyes on her to make sure she doesn’t leave with anything she didn’t come with,” I complain.

“I’m not worried about that, Stormey,” Auntie replies. “I invited Skye over as well. It’s been a long time since we all had a chance to have dinner together.”

“I don’t think this is a good idea, Auntie. I don’t want to be in the same room with either of them.”

“Stormey, we’re family. No matter who does what, how many times we stumble, we will always be here for each other. That’s what family does. We forgive each other and we give second, third, and fourth chances. We don’t give up on one another. Your DNA won’t change and no matter how much you dislike it, everything you are is because of the people you come from.”

“Don’t remind me. I wish you were my mother. I mean, can you imagine what my life would have been like if I hadn’t been born to such a disgraceful woman? Why couldn’t my mother have been more like you?”

“Oh, Stormey. I’m honored that you see me the way you do, but you can’t keep living your life wishing it were different. You’ll never access joy carrying on this way.”

“I don’t know, Auntie. You always say the past doesn’t matter because it’s already over, but over isn’t undone. I can’t help but want to live a pain-free life like others seem to have,” I explain.

“Better is a matter of perception,” Auntie replies. “You can’t always see other people’s problems but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. The truth is, Stormey, everyone has something they are going through, just came through, or are walking into. Everyone goes through something and everyone feels pain but we are all meant to go through it, not take residence in it.”

She continues, “You can’t get stuck and wallow in your circumstances. You must decide whether you want to live your life in pity or in power, as a victim or a victor, making excuses or making things happen. The choice is yours. If you keep moving forward you will see there’s a purpose for everything you’ve been through but you can’t get anywhere by ascending backwards.”

“Ascending backwards?”

“It’s an oxymoron. You can’t move forward and backward at the same time. If you continue moving forward while looking in the rearview, you will eventually crash.
